Buying fresh Florida oranges by the case is much more cost effective than buying them at the grocery store, but many people do not buy cases because they do not think they would eat all the oranges in the case before they go bad. You can buy cases of oranges and keep them fresh or preserve them to save money and to get high quality oranges. Here are some tips that you can use to keep your Florida oranges and other citrus fruits fresh for longer:
Put the oranges in the fridge - Leave a few oranges in a bowl that you can eat during the day but keep the rest in the fruit and vegetable crisper in the refrigerator. Keeping the oranges in a cool, dry place will make them last weeks longer than room temperature fruit. If you are going to take some of your oranges to your office keep them in an insulated bag at your desk with a cold pack in it or keep them in the refrigerator in the break room. Just do not forget that they are there and forget to eat them.
Keep oranges away from the stove - Being near a heat source like the stove can make oranges and other fruits go bad more quickly. So no not put oranges or citrus fruits on the counter or in bins near the stove because the heat from the stove disseminates through the counters.
Keep oranges away from the sink - Being in a damp place, like under the sink or in a bin next to the sink, can cause mold to grow on the oranges. Even though it may be cool under the sink or near the sink keep the oranges well away from any areas that might be damp or wet like cabinets or countertops near the sink.
Freeze orange juice - If you are sure that you will not be able to eat all the oranges that you have before they begin to go bad an excellent way to use them up is to juice them all and then freeze the juice. That way you will still have fresh squeezed Florida orange juice to use for smoothies, drinks, cooking and just drinking plain. Freezing immediately after juicing will preserve all the vitamins and minerals in the juice so you will still get all the benefits of fresh squeezed juice. You can also make and freeze orange marmalade or orange jelly so that you can enjoy Florida oranges all year round.
