About Mail Order Fruit

By Sandy Sachs. February 3, 2011.

The first fruit baskets were ordered by American businesses in the 1940s. They were often shipped to clients as a holiday or thank-you gift. Because the delivery costs were high, mail order fruit did not catch on with the average American until much later on. In fact, it was not until popular package delivery companies like UPS and Fed Ex started shipping perishable items that fruit baskets became an affordable gift.

Why do folks send fruit? The two most popular items to send through the mail are flowers and mail order fruit. Fruit became a favorite with businesses because sending flowers has an obvious romantic connotation, which was clearly inappropriate. Still, they wanted to send their clients and business partners something to show them that they appreciated their business. Fruit was the logical choice. Not only was it healthy and nutritious, but it could be enjoyed by the entire office.

How about sending fruit yourself? Many people wonder why they should buy a fruit basket when there is a supermarket right down the street. All they have to do, presumably, is purchase a nice selection of fresh fruit, arrange them in a basket, wrap them in cellophane, and ship them. They can do it all on their own, right? Well, yes, we suppose. But they aren’t going to save much money.

While it may have been possible to save money making your own fruit basket in the past, the internet has changed all that.  Online sellers are able to offer rock-bottom prices that simply can’t be beat on mail order fruit. Because they do not have to pay the costs associated with a traditional brick and mortar business, they are able to pass these savings on to their customers.

Where to look? When buying mail order fruit on the internet, there are three basic types of sellers: florists, gift basket companies, and fruit suppliers. Florists are popular because they offer speedy delivery, but since their focus is on flowers, their selection is often limited. The same can be said of gift basket companies, which typically offer many different kinds of baskets and do not specialize in fruit. As a general rule of thumb, both sellers rely on fruit farmers and distributors for their mail order fruit.

This is important because it means that the fruit will have to be shipped to them before it can be delivered to you. As a result, the fruit will not be as fresh and they will have to mark up the price in order to pay for the repackaging and shipping costs.
That is why it is always best to purchase mail order fruit directly from fruit farmers and fruit suppliers. Having the fruit shipped directly to you will cut out the superfluous middleman and save you a good deal of cash.
