The Navel Orange

The Navel orange came about as a mutation in 1820 in a sweet orange orchard located in a Brazilian monastery. This mutation results in a second orange developing at the base of the first, and this orange also develops a twin of small orange segments, which, when opened, come together to form what looks like a human belly button, or navel. This mutation also makes the fruit sterile, which means that all navel oranges must be produced with cutting and grafting. This also means that the genetic makeup of each navel orange is identical to that of the original navel orange tree.  Although the navel orange is not as juicy as some other types, it does have an easily removable rind, and an intense flavor.

Navel orange trees can grow up to 50 feet in height and require fine, sandy soil with a large drainage capacity, since orange trees require a large amount of support from their roots to maintain their size and load of tasty citrus.  In addition to delicious navel oranges, these trees also produce Florida’s state flower, the orange blossom.

Orange blossoms are used to make mild and delicious orange honey, and are also the sole source of food for the giant Swallowtail butterfly. These caterpillars, called orange dogs, are brown and white in color unless disturbed or threatened. When this happens, the caterpillars extend a pair of extremely long orange scent horns that have a less than appealing smell and are fairly successful in warding off would be predators.

Navel oranges are delicious, healthy treats that everyone can enjoy, from delicious navel orange juice, to fragrant navel orange honey and more, these fruits are versatile and work well in any number of unique and creative recipes.  Why not try a navel orange cake or a delicious, frothy navel orange smoothie? How about a light and healthy salad topped with fresh navel oranges?  You can also use the zest of the orange to liven up dishes like baked chicken, pot roast, and more. The possibilities for this fruit are limited only by your innovation and imagination.
