Recipes Using Navel Oranges
There are a variety of different ways you can use navel oranges. Anything you can make with ordinary oranges will work better with navel oranges since they are seedless, juicy and naturally sweet. One of the more common uses for navel oranges is Ambrosia Salad. The ingredients are as follows:
* 6 navel oranges
* 1/4 cup powdered sugar
* 2 cups grated coconut
* 1/3 cup orange juice
* 6 maraschino cherries
While some cooks might prefer to simply mix all the ingredients together, you should actually peel the navel oranges into slices, place one-third of them into a serving dish with one-third of the sugar and one-third of the coconut. You need to repeat the process twice and then pour the orange juice on top of the mixture and refrigerate for one hour. You can then decorate with the cherries before serving. For those who do not care for cherries you can choose to leave them out of the recipe or replace them with another fruit such as strawberry slices or grapes.
Another delicious recipe for navel orange is Brown Sugar and Balsamic Glazed Oranges. You need the following ingredients:
* 2 medium navel oranges (approximately one pound)
* 2 tablespoons brown sugar
* 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
Peel the navel oranges and slice them crosswise into slices 1/4″ thick. Divide the orange slices evenly between two plates then combine the brown sugar and vinegar and drip over the oranges. Place in covered dish and refrigerate for two hours. For those who are watching their calories or sugar, you might substitute Splenda Brown Sugar for regular brown sugar. After the mixture is cold, arrange it on a bed of lettuce and top with a garnish or orange zest curls or a sprig of mint.
While there are many more recipes you can find or create to use with your navel oranges, these are two that look and sound quite tasty. Most everyone is familiar with Ambrosia Salad although most people do not think to use navel oranges-they usually buy a bag of oranges thinking they are less expensive. While the initial cost may be lower, you have to use more oranges when you use ordinary oranges instead of navel oranges.
Another advantage to using navel oranges in recipes is their abundance of juice and sweetness. While manufacturers use Valencia oranges when navel oranges are unavailable, you create the best tasting orange juice with navel oranges. These juicy oranges contain more juice than ordinary oranges so you will need to use fewer oranges to obtain the same desired effect. The season and where you live will have a great deal to do with the availability of navel oranges, but ordering online is always a viable option.
