Add Navel Oranges to Your Holiday Fruit Bowl
When you put out the nuts for the holidays, be sure you add some fruit as well. In addition to the other fruit, add some navel oranges. You can choose to add navel oranges in one piece or you can put them into a bowl in sections if you are planning to serve the fruit right away. Some people place a bowl of fruit on the table, especially during the holidays, and if you are doing that, you can certainly remove the peeling from the navel oranges and serve just the sections.
During the holidays many people also create edible arrangements instead of just having a bowl of fruit. If you are creative, you can take the time to add navel oranges to the rest of the fruit in your edible arrangement; but how you choose to use it is totally up to you. One of the best ways to add to an edible arrangement is to choose fruit that will fit with the theme of the season: creating Christmas trees, snowmen and the like. You can use food coloring in order to make all the fruit fit in with the theme of your arrangement.
Having a mixture of holiday fruits has been a tradition for many years. In the 20th century it was very common to put fruit and nuts in a child’s Christmas stocking, and almost always one of the fruits was a navel orange. Because it was large and seedless, it was very appropriate for the occasion. Of course, there were usually other fruits in addition to the navel oranges-or whatever oranges the givers decided to use-but the theme was fruit and nuts. Although we have swayed from that tradition, people are still putting together fruit and nut bowls during the holidays.
Your holiday fruit bowl does not have to be boring by any means. You can take the navel oranges and make them into various holiday shapes and add color to make them festive. The choices you have are limited only by your creativity and maybe a good holiday cookbook! You can do whatever you want with your navel oranges: cut them into sections and put them in a bowl of whipped cream to make them appear to be sitting in snow, serve navel orange juice in festive colors (and festive glasses), cut faces into the peelings so they resemble Santa and his elves or any other ideas that may enter into your head.
