Clementine Oranges – They’re Not Just for Eating Anymore

Most people hardly give Clementine oranges a thought while shopping up and down their produce aisles. Because they are smaller and not as well known as regular oranges, people tend to choose more normal fruits, like Navel oranges. However, clementines are definitely worth purchasing.

Besides being tasty additions to things like salads or cakes, clementines are worth their weight in gold around the house. From cleaning marble countertops to keeping flies away to even keeping stray hairs in place, there is almost no limit to what Clementine oranges can do. On top of that, they are a fantastic deal during the winter months that they are in season.

Those with marble countertops know how difficult they can be to clean. In fact, many people resort to using expensive cleaners that are packed with potentially harmful chemicals. Instead of such cleansing agents, homeowners can use clementines! When cut in half, lightly dipped in salt and then gently scrubbed on the marble, the clementines efficiently and naturally remove grime from the surface.

Lots of people with garbage disposals in their kitchens can attest to the fact that they sometimes get a little funky smelling. Still, almost no amount of gross odor is a match for the power of Clementine oranges. When cut into large chunks and run through a foul smelling garbage disposal, the citrus leaves the sink smelling fresh.

When desperate times call for desperate measures, people can even make hairspray out of Clementine oranges. Those in serious need of hairspray as soon as possible can make their own by slicing the clementines (either peeled or unpeeled), into two-inch pieces and placing them in a saucepan. When two cups of water is added and the mixture is allowed to boil for around 15 minutes, hairspray is the end result!

Clementine oranges can even be used to keep pests away. If cat owners find that their kitties are constantly chewing on their houseplants, they can keep the cats at bay by rubbing the leaves of the plants with the peels of clementines.

Because cats cannot stand the scent of citrus, they will stay away from the plants for weeks. Interestingly enough, this method does not seem to have any negative effects on the plants themselves. Similarly, flies are also kept away by the scent of clementines (or any other strong-smelling citrus).
