Fruit Shipping 101
You may think fruit shipping is as easy as throwing a few pieces of fruit into a box and shipping it, but it is much more regulated then that. You need follow the fruit shipping guidelines and ensure that you stay within the federal standards of food safety if you are going to send fruit to your son in college, cousins in a different state or daughter studying abroad. It is best to check either on the internet, at your United States Postal Service location or contact the United States Department of Agriculture for any information on restrictions before you pay to send a package that never arrives because you have broken the law and the package gets confiscated by the government.
Once you have acquired the appropriate information about fruit shipping from your state and to another (or another country) you will now need the following items: of course the fruit you would like to send, some form of protective wrapping such as bubble wrap, foam or peanuts, a cardboard box suitable to be sent in the postal system, and brown paper (either from a grocery bag or purchased for packaging). Then you will need to secure the package for fruit shipping with packing tape either at the post office or at home, and of course pay the appropriate amount to have it shipped properly to your recipient.
Start by putting together the box and securing it to ensure it will not fall apart during the fruit shipping process. Place a protective layer around the perimeter of the box to ensure that the fruit are not exposed to violent movement within the box, which will cause bruising. Then individually wrap the fruit or place them in crates to hold the fruit in place during the fruit shipping. You do not want to wrap the fruit in plastic as it will cause the fruit to sweat and may even cause it to go bad. Never wrap fruit in plastic during the fruit shipping process, or even in your own home. It is much better to wrap fruit in paper. It is best include some form of refrigeration such as a dry ice pack or a frozen gel pad to ensure the fruit is not exposed to extreme heat during the fruit shipping process.
Once you have completed packing the box, secure it shut and clearly label the box with your return address, the address of the sender and also include a statement such as ‘Perishable’ on different locations so a postal worker does not leave the box on the doorstep of a house. For fruit shipping it is best to pay for overnight shipping or one day delivery and notify the recipient that there is something coming to them.
