Honeybells Have an Interesting History

Do you know the history of Honeybells? Honeybells are one of the most popular citrus fruits but compared to other citrus fruits like oranges or grapefruits they are very young. Oranges have been prized for thousands of years. Grapefruits have a long and varied history. But Honeybells are the newcomer on the citrus fruit scene. This large, bright, uniquely shaped fruit was created by a food scientist who crossed a tangelo with a grapefruit to create a totally new citrus fruit which was named the Honeybell because of the shape of the fruit. The end of the fruit is shaped like the inside of a bell. The shape, combines with the super sweet taste of the fruit, led to the name the Honeybell. It’s just coincidence that Honeybells are only available during Christmas time, when bells are a featured as a symbol of the holiday. Because this fantastic fruit is only available from December until about the end of January it has become a part of Christmas tradition and thousands of families give Honeybells as holiday gifts or use them as stocking stuffers for Christmas stockings every year.

Honeybells are not like other citrus fruits because they were deliberately created. Some citrus fruit varieties were created by nature, like the navel orange. The Navel orange has a unique shape resembling a human navel because everytime one grows a twin of the original fruit grows inside the skin of the orange but never develops. So essentially every Navel orange has another orange inside it. These oranges are seedless and can’t reproduce on their own. Honeybells were deliberately created through a series of plant experimentations that were designed to create a super fruit that was exceptionally delicious, juicy, and pretty to look at. The Honeybell is all of those things and more.
