Navel oranges are the perfect way to add some sweetness and light to your New Year’s Eve party. After eating rich foods, cookies, and other traditional holiday sweets for the weeks leading up to Christmas many people are tired of overly sweet food and drinks when New Year’s Eve comes around. Instead of serving the same old holiday recipes this year use navel oranges to add some sparkle to your cocktails and snacks. Here are some fun and easy ways to change up your old recipes with navel oranges:
A punch for everyone – Keep the beverage selection light and sparkling by mixing club soda and fresh naval orange juice with ice. This simple and inexpensive punch is great for everyone from small kids to elderly guests. Designated drivers will appreciate having a sparkling beverage that tastes great which they can drink all night. Add some vodka or gin if you want to make an alcoholic version, just don’t forget to label the one with the alcohol so everyone knows which is which.

Add kick to cocktails – Add a splash of fresh naval orange juice to traditional cocktails to add a little tang and a kick of flavor. Traditional tea drinks like Long Island Iced Tea taste even more refreshing with some fresh orange juice added. Lemonades and other light cocktails also are more fun with a splash of orange juice. Add candied peels from navel oranges or sliced segments of navel oranges to the glasses for a festive garnish.

Create a citrus fruit plate – Your guests who are watching what they eat and the guests who may not be able to eat chocolate or other sweets will really appreciate it if you create a sweet citrus fruit plate that they can eat from throughout the night. Use navel oranges, exotic honeybells, grapefruits and tangerines to create a beautiful looking fruit plate. Arrange the segments with a light fruit dip or add some fresh berries to the plate to give it color and texture.

Prepare a light breakfast for guests who linger – For the special guests who are invited to stay after the ball drops prepare a light breakfast of pancakes topped with segments from navel oranges and some berries. Make sure that you have plenty of fresh juice to stave off those hangovers! Mix grapefruit juice with the juice of some navel oranges for a sweet and tangy citrus juice that your guests will really enjoy.
