Tangerines and Mandarin Oranges

The tangerine fruit is also known as the Mandarin orange and when shopping for this fruit the terms Mandarin orange and tangerine are used interchangeably. To be technically correct however; tangerines are actually a sub group of the Mandarin orange, so they are actually two entirely different fruits. The flavor of the Mandarin orange is quite distinct actually and is very tart compared to the super sweet taste of a tangerine. You will find that a tangerine has a deep orange color with puffy loose fitting skin that is pebbly. You can also store tangerines in your refrigerator for up to seven full days, which is great because they do not go bad that quickly.

When you are shopping for tangerines you might want to make sure you are getting the best tangerines out of the batch on display at the market. To do this you will need to know a little something about tangerines. Due to their loose fitting skin will feel soft, puffy and should feel a bit heavy for their size. If you come across a tangerine that is dry and pithy then it is not good. You will want to make sure you choose tangerines with a glossy, deep orange skin. If you come across a tangerine that has a green patch near the stem, and is a glossy, deep orange then it is still okay. In fact that type of tangerine is actually really fresh and should be delicious.

The tangerine fruit is great because once you take them home from the local grocery store or the local super market there are many ways to eat them. You can use them in fruit salads, cooked dishes, regular salads and desserts. You can also just peel the tangerine, separate the segments and eat it raw. Just be sure to spit out or avoid the seeds. Also if you want you can spice up your tuna salad or coleslaw by adding in some tangerine. This makes for an amazing and colorful treat.

This fruit is amazing for everyone because they are easy to peel and eat, making them great for snacking on in between meals. The loose, pebbly peel is easy for small hands to peel, so if you have been looking for a kid friendly healthy snack stock up on tangerines this winter.Tangerines have many of the same health benefits as citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits. They are packed with Vitamin C and this makes them the best sweet and healthy treat you can get.
