If you are enjoying a visit in Vero Beach, Florida, then one place you should not miss is The Heritage Center and Indian River Citrus Museum. At the museum, you can revisit Vero Beach’s history and learn about the people who settled the area and founded the growing citrus fruit industry.

Beginning of the Florida Citrus Industry

Settlers as far back as the early 1800’s were already planting and cultivating commercial citrus groves. The Indian River Lagoon region, along the middle of the Florida eastern coast was proven to produce the most delicious and juice-laden citrus fruit from its groves. The Indian River Citrus Museum has numerous documents, images and memorabilia that tell the story of the development of the citrus fruit industry, which still flourishes in the area today.

Model of the Citrus Processing Plant

One of the most interesting exhibits in the museum is the three-dimensional model of the very first packing and processing plant in Vero Beach. Your fingers can take a walk through the miniature plant while examining how the citrus was processed back then and compare it to how processing is executed today.

Historical Photographs

The museum has a large display of historical artifacts including photographs showing the history of the citrus industry in Vero Beach, and how it developed. You can see the pioneers in the citrus industry and how increased technology over the years improved the quality of the oranges, grapefruits, tangerines and other citrus fruit.

Museum Gift Shop

After viewing the exhibits, take a few moments to browse the Citrus Museum’s Gift Shop to pick up unique souvenirs from this visit to Vero Beach. You can find further historical information, local artwork and citrus products to remind you of your stay.

Tours and Events

The museum has a regular schedule of interesting tours and events throughout the year. Check the calendar for dates and times of these events so that you do not miss them.
