Known as Doyenné Du Comice, Comice Pears were actually a French variety that was first grown in the mid-1800s. Today, Comice Pears are considered the sweetest and juiciest of all pear varieties. The sweet flesh of the Comice is scrumptious freshly sliced on its own or a beautiful and tasteful combination when paired with soft cheeses. Bartlett Pears were discovered in 1765 by a schoolmaster in England named Mr. Stair (the Bartlett was first referred to as Stair’s Pear). Bartlett Pears also have a typical pear shape and a light green color that changes to more of a yellow as they ripen at room temperature. Available in September, these pears are aromatic and succulent. Bartlett Pears are great for snacks, canning, adding to salads, slaws, sandwiches, grilled cheese sandwiches, desserts and even served with cheeses, nuts or on crostini as an appetizer.
