2025 Easter Gifts with Nary an Egg in Sight
The bird flu outbreak is entering its fourth consecutive year in the US, resulting in the loss of millions of chickens, skyrocketing egg prices, and an overall egg shortage that’s leaving store shelves understocked and limiting the number of cartons customers are permitted to purchase.
Eggs are a staple food, and Americans are feeling the pinch caused by this bird pandemic. If you’re on social media, you may have noticed a sharp increase in articles and recipes suggesting a variety of substitutions and replacements of eggs for use in serving, cooking and baking – just recently, we even spotted a recipe for “deviled eggs” featuring new baby potatoes!
The avian flu won’t last forever (we hope), but in the meantime, eggs are both costly and scarce this Easter – meaning you might be wondering if hard cooking them for dyeing might not be practical. Plastic Easter eggs have been around for decades but, while popular, they haven’t replaced using real eggs for Easter. For one thing, with plastic eggs you miss the fun of dyeing them; for another, they’re not at all good for the environment. But more importantly in the minds of some parents is the lack of nutrition in their contents – plastic eggs tend to be filled with jellybeans, chocolates, and other sugary treats, while colored hard-cooked eggs brought by the fabled bunny act as nutritious, satisfying “treats” adults can feel good about letting their kids nosh on once they’ve found them.
Instead of an Egg Hunt, Plan a Fruit Hunt!
Some folks are going so far as to decorate small, smooth stones with bright paints to use in place of the traditional hard-boiled eggs in an egg hunt, but while that might be a fun activity to do ahead of time, the seekers won’t get the satisfaction of being able to gobble up their discoveries.
Here’s an idea from Hale: instead of dyed eggs, how about hiding fruit? Once we started thinking about it, it seemed an obvious alternative…while a hard-cooked egg and, say, a tangerine may be very different foods, they do have a lot in common:
- They’re similar in size
- Both are round(ish)
- Both are rich in nutrients
- Both can be peeled and eaten on the spot
Of course, you can’t dye tangerines or other citrus fruit a fun color, but then again, you don’t need to – they already come in spring-bright shades that are easy to spot!
Tangerines aren’t the only fruits that can serve as quarry in an old-fashioned egg hunt, either…many of our most popular winter citrus offerings are still in season and, in addition to making wonderful gifts, will fit into your holiday celebration perfectly.
