Eating Honeybells by themselves is always a treat, but since Honeybell tangelos are only in season for a short while and need to be enjoyed during a very short period of time, some people can tire of eating Honeybells by themselves. Luckily there are many ways to enjoy Honeybells besides eating them plain. Used in smoothies, desserts, sauces, and other dishes, Honeybells add a unique and sweet flavor to your favorite dishes. Honeybells also make great jams and preserves, which can be enjoyed throughout the year. Here are some fun and unusual ways to use Honeybell tangelos during the month or so that they are in season:

1. Honeybell compote- Making a compote is easy. A Honeybell compote, with its fresh and bright orange color and super sweet taste that comes from the huge amounts of juice in a Honeybell, is a delicious way to start the day. Chop up one or two peeled Honeybells, making sure to remove the pith. Make a simple syrup by boiling water and sugar together. Mix in some fresh Honeybell juice and the cubed fruit. Boil it all together until the fruit pieces are tender and swimming in the sugary citrus syrup. Serve the compote over waffles, pancakes, toast or pound cake for breakfast. You can also serve the warm compote over shortcakes or ice cream for dessert.

2. Honeybell sorbet – Honeybells make a super sorbet that is a fantastic palette cleanser during a fancy meal. It also tastes great for dessert. To make a Honeybell sorbet you’ll need about two cups of segmented Honeybell fruit, along with about 1 cup or so of fresh juice. Mix the fruit and juice in a blender with some sugar until smooth. Keep adding sugar to taste. When the mixture is frothy it’s ready to be frozen. You can use an ice cream maker to chill the sorbet or you can simply put it in a container and chill it until it’s firm.

3. Honeybell popsicles – These popsicles can be kept for up to two weeks if they are stored in the freezer in a sealed plastic bag. Honeybells have so much juice that they are perfect for making popsicles. Just squeeze the juice from two or three Honeybells and if you want mix it with a little sugar, although Honeybell oranges are so sweet they usually don’t need sugar. Then pour the juice into plastic popsicle molds, or pour it into an empty ice cube tray and place popsicle sticks or tooth picks in the juice. Freeze the juice, and you will have homemade nutritious and delicious popsicles.
