Citrus and Your Health
Citrus and your health has been a topic in many health conversations over the past decades. Citrus fruits are known to have lots of vitamins and nutrients that the body needs to function properly. When it comes to the grapefruit, they say you should eat or drink once daily to help provide you with a sufficient about of fiber and vitamin C. It also helps to lower your cholesterol. Grapefruit are larger than the other citrus fruits, such as the limes, lemons, oranges and tangerines. They have yellowish orange peeling and a slight aftertaste, which leads people to put sugar on the flesh before eating – this isn’t all too healthy by the way.
Grapefruit can be squeezed into a fruit drink or eaten with a spoon. Others simply peel and bite into the flesh as is. In order to get the proper amounts of fiber that the grapefruit provides, you must eat the walls that separate the flesh within.
Then there are the usual oranges, which everyone knows are great for vitamin C and keeping/fighting away colds and other mild illnesses. Besides vitamin C, you can find lots of other nutrients, including vitamin A, vitamin B, calcium, folic acid, phosphorous and potassium. Those that have various illnesses can seek health benefits in oranges, such as those who have asthma, bronchitis, tuberculosis, rheumatism, arthritis, high blood pressure and pneumonia. There are many types of oranges to choose from as well. Tangerines too are a good pick and are a lot juicier and sweeter.
It has even been known that limes are used to help enhance vision, not by eating, but by squeezing a couple of drops directly into the eyes (from the corners); this is a technique practiced by the martial artists in Asia. Citrus fruits are commonly used in cleaning products, so it isn’t surprising that it helps to clean out our bodies. They are also used in aromatherapy and air fresheners.
There are multiple ways that citrus and your health are a great combination. First off, they are great for your skin. They have antioxidant nutrients that help to protect your skin. You will see a lot of skin care products with citrus juice as one of their ingredients. Another reason why citrus and your health go hand in hand is because it helps your bones. Calcium and vitamin D are given to your bones to make them stronger.
