Tangerines: The Solution To Orange Burnout

By: The Hale Groves Team | On: | Category: Fruit Facts

Getting a little tired of oranges are we? Do you feel that if you have one more glass of the “liquid sunshine” called OJ that you’ll have to switch to vodka? Have oranges just become too much work to eat? Do give up on the citrus, just try something that might be a little more to your liking. Buy a bunch of tangerines and see if that doesn’t make a difference.

Yes tangerines are kind of cousins of the orange as they descend from the Mandarin but they can be a whole lot better tasting and without question they are more fun to eat. You obviously know what they are, you loved them as a kid, so why not rediscover these juice bursting little golden fruit as an adult?

Tangerines are available from October to as late as June so odds are your store, or better yet your Farmers’ Market, has them in stock. They come with the same powerful health benefits as the orange but they also come with a sweeter, easier flesh that just drips with goodness and sits well on your stomach because of the lower acidic content.

Health benefits are important and that’s why you made sure you got a glass of orange juice inside you every day isn’t it. Well the tangerine is small but it packs a whollop when it comes to the good stuff for you.

Vitamin C leads the way and is of course a powerful antioxidant that can help prevent several forms as cancer as well as give your immune system a boost. That by itself is a pretty good deal particularly in the winter when flu and colds abound. But there is so much more.

Tangerines also have vitamins B1, B2 and B3, beta-carotenes, folate and both soluble and insoluble fiber. The fiber in these little miracles not only helps lower cholesterol but also make them much easier to digest than an orange.

But enough about health, let’s talk taste. There are actually over a hundred varieties of this little fruit. Each one comes with a slightly different characteristic and you may have trouble picking out your favorite. All tangerines are easy to peel which makes them a favorite out of hand fruit, but the flavor can run from slightly tart to richly sweet.

If you have a Farmers’ Market, or if your local store allows for samples, taste one before you buy a bunch. Once you find you’re favorite you are going to happily switch from oranges and chow down on these little wedges of fruit heaven.
