How to Find the Best Grapefruit Year Round
If you love fresh grapefruit you can find it year round if you look hard enough. Citrus farms in sub tropical areas, like Florida, produce millions of pounds of fresh grapefruit, oranges, tangerines and other citrus fruit every year. Grapefruit is a breakfast staple that many people wouldn’t dream of starting their day without, and fresh grapefruit is the best treat of all. Instead of buying shipped produce from grocery stores buy your fresh grapefruit directly from the growers by buying online and you will get grapefruit delivered to your door that has only just been picked and harvested. Buying a box or two of fresh citrus fruit at a time will ensure that you don’t run out of healthy, sweet grapefruit. Here are some tips that you can use to tell if your grapefruit is fresh and just picked:
Plump fruit is ripe fruit – The grapefruit should arrive looking like it’s going to burst out of the skin. The plumper the grapefruit is the more ripe it is. A perfect grapefruit will be just about bursting through the pebbly outer skin. When you open the grapefruit it should have a large quantity of juice and the pulp should have a rich, deep color. If you find that one grapefruit is plump, juicy and has good color inside then most likely all the rest of the fruit in the box does as well. The grapefruit should be solid when you pick it up too, and when you squeeze the skin it should bounce back into shape quickly.
Color is a great gauge of freshness – The outside color of the fruit can tell you how ripe the fruit is inside. The outside peel of the grapefruit should have a slightly reddish color if the fruit is ripe and ready to eat. The more color the outside skin has the deeper the flavor of the grapefruit will be. Unless you are picking a white grapefruit, which shouldn’t have any color on the outside, ripe grapefruit, just like a ripe orange, should have a vibrant color on the outside when the fruit is at peak freshness.
Check the shape of the fruit -When grapefruit has reached maturity it should have a slightly oval shape with a flat bottom and a slightly flattened top. If the fruit is too round it may not be quite ready to eat. If you get some pieces of fruit that have not yet reached the perfect shape but have color in the skin and feel plump and heavy they should be just as tasty and juicy as the rest of the fruit in the box.
