Understanding the Appeal of Honeybell Tangelos
If you could have the perfect citrus fruit, how would it taste? How would it smell? What nutrients would you want it to contain?
Some people consider the Honeybell tangelo, also sometimes the Minneola tangelo, to be just about the ultimate in citrus fruit. It’s custom-made, too, a special hybrid of very specific grapefruit and pomelo breeds to offer the most juice, the sweetest pulp, and the healthiest ingredients.
How to Build The Perfect Citrus Fruit
Honeybells are given their name thanks to their shape, which roughly approximates the town bells of vintage Americana. They fit into the palm of your hand, making them easy to transport in pockets and lunchboxes.
The pulp of the honeybell tangelo is extremely succulent. In fact there’s enough juice inside to practically fill a good-sized glass! Even the skin is durable, meaning it’s a great citrus fruit to take anywhere you want to go.
Humble Beginnings in the Heart of Citrus Country
The honeybell tangelo was first bred by Florida citrus fruit growers in the 1930s, near the village of Minneola in what is today part of the greater Orlando area. These intrepid farmers wanted to breed the juicy texture of the grapefruit with the sweetness of the pomelo, in order to get the best of both worlds.
Their diligence paid off. Today, the honeybell tangelos so juicy, so perfect, that many citrus fruit experts consider practically the ultimate fruit. Yet for all their nutritious power, they’re unfortunately not that plentiful. The honeybell, grown in Florida in the same fertile ground and sunny climes as the world famous Florida oranges, are available for a only a few weeks in midwinter.
The Honeybell’s Incredible Nutritional Value
The easily surpasses the nutritional value of most other fruits – even most other citrus fruits! Each tangelo is loaded with both Vitamin A and Vitamin C, both of which are proven to boost the human body’s immune system and to help the body convert food into energy more efficiently.
Honeybells are also rich in nutrients such as calcium for building healthy bones and teeth. They even have fiber and protein to help promote good muscle and tissue construction.
