Add Navel Oranges to Your Fruit Bowl Centerpiece

Many people have developed the habit of adding a fruit bowl to the center of their dining room or living room table. This is a welcome change from candy, nuts and other high calorie foods. While nuts in themselves are not unhealthy, when they sit in front of guests in your home, they can become rather tempting and eaten in abundance can kill any diet. Placing fruit bowls in the vicinity of guests and on your tables can encourage guests and family members to consume healthier snacks. While even eating too much fruit can be bad for you because of the natural sugars it contains, when you are careful of the consumption, even people watching their weight and blood sugar levels can eat healthy snacks of fresh fruit.

If you develop the habit of including navel oranges in your fruit bowl instead of cookies and candy, you will teach the children healthy eating habits. Children follow what they see; if they see adults eating fruit, they will develop the habit of reaching for a piece of fruit. A bowl of navel oranges placed predominantly on the dining room or living room table will encourage fruit consumption, and fruit is a natural source of Vitamin C and antioxidants. In order to add some color to your fruit bowl you can add some Red navel oranges as well.

One of the problems many people have with oranges is they feel they have a sour or bitter flavor. While this may be true of some oranges, navel oranges are sweet and very juicy. These qualities are enough to draw people to navel oranges, even those who have previously avoided any kind of oranges. The same holds true for those who have chosen to avoid orange juice because of what they perceive to be a bitter taste. While orange juice may appear to be bitter compared to apple or pineapple juice, when it is extracted from navel oranges it is rather sweet and delicate.

Next time you have guests coming for dinner, buy some navel oranges and have a bowl of them setting out in addition to other fruits such as apples, bananas, pears, grapes and peaches. You won’t have to worry about anyone spoiling his or her appetite when he or she eats fruit nor will they have to worry about ruining their diet. For your dessert of the evening, prepare a fruit salad that includes many of the delectable fruits including Florida navel oranges. No one says dessert has to be full of calories though most of us equate dessert with a high calorie high sugar cake, pie or ice cream concoction.
