Surprisingly, there are many varieties of citrus that are available almost any time of year. Florida oranges, for example, can be shipped as early as October and even as late as June. Early season oranges like Navels and Hamlins are favorite eating oranges. Their juice is very sweet and is pale in color. Mid season brings varieties that are richer in color. Later season oranges like Valencias are prized for their sweetness and are often used for juice.
Like oranges, tangerines and tangelos are available at different times. The harvest season for these specialty citrus varities is much shorter than for oranges. One special tangelo, the Honeybell, is perhaps most valued because it has the shortest harvesting season of all. Tangerines and tangelos are prized for their easy-to-peel skins and few seeds. Once peeled, they are easily separated into sections as well.
Grapefruit, the king of Florida citrus, comes in several varieties and are available from October to June like oranges. Grapefruit varieties are either red, pink or white. Some varieties are nearly seedless and all are excellent for eating and for juicing.
