Fruit Baskets Instead Of Flowers
How revolutionary is the idea of sending a fruit basket in place of flowers? Not very as it turns out. In this down economy people are always looking for value and when you compare these two gifts the fruit basket wins hands down.
Think about that for a moment. In terms of cost they are about the same. A big bouquet of flowers will cost the same as a large basket of fresh fruit. The flowers arrive, there is the initial oohing and ahhing and then five days later they’re dead and thrown in the trash. Actually it’s not even that simple. As the days go by and petals start falling off and stems start to droop, you spend time rearranging them trying to make it look better than it is. Your last memory of the flowers is the poor pathetic look of a dying plant.
The fruit basket on the other hand, will probably get more oohs and ahhs because nobody expects it. It has the same eye appeal with golden colors of oranges and tangerines mixed in with other hues found on grapefruit and pears. And hey, how many flower arrangements come with nuts and chocolate? And aroma! Just peel back the cellophane that it comes wrapped in and inhale that tangy fresh fruit perfume.
Then there is the obvious difference that you don’t just look at the fruit basket. It’s interactive. You eat the fruit basket. Try that with a bunch of thorny roses.
How great is that for the person who gets it? Delicious succulent juice that is almost decadent but not so much that it stops them from eating it all up. Imagine that great big smile on their face as they peel a honey tangerine and pop a red sweet wedge of fruit nectar into their mouth. Who’s having more fun now? The guy with the fruit or the guy with the flowers?
So the next time there’s a birthday, or anniversary, or somebody needs a get well soon gift, or Mother’s Day, or just a “I’m thinking of you” moment, think fruit baskets instead of petunias. It will be a surprise that that will be thoroughly enjoyed and will not be forgotten any time soon. Of course sending a fruit basket instead of a flower arrangement doesn’t eliminate the sometimes painful process of coming up with something original for the card. Just please refrain from trying to be witty by sending “Orange you glad these aren’t flowers?”
