Fun Ways to Eat Georgia Peaches

Uh oh…you just realized you have way more fresh peaches than you can eat before they go off. We get it…your friends at Hale Groves totally get that peach mania can go to your head when peach season rolls around (especially when our Sweet Georgia Peaches, which are available for such a short time are in stock). If you love peaches as much as we do there’s a decent chance you won’t have any left over to worry about, but just in case you did happen to order too many, here are some great peaches tips that will help you use them up – and love every second of it!

How to Eat Peaches (Besides Fresh Out of Hand)

Sinking your teeth into a fresh, fragrant peach and letting the juices run down your chin is one of the joys of summer, but there are other ways to enjoy these delectable delights – ways that don’t require much prep. In fact, all you have to do is cut them up:

Add them to your cereal. Why should bananas and berries have all the fun? Fresh peach cubes or slices are a healthy and delicious addition to sugar-free cereals like shredded wheat, bran flakes, oatmeal, grain nuts and granola.
Mix them into yogurt. Flavored yogurts may seem like a healthy breakfast option, but they generally contain too many added sugars and additives to support a balanced diet. Make your own by adding sweet peach slices to plain or Greek yogurt; the difference in taste is phenomenal.
Use as an ice cream topping. A bowl of vanilla ice cream is an extra-special summertime treat when topped with fresh peaches! Add some chocolate, butterscotch or caramel sauce, whipped cream and nuts to make a sundae.
Slice them into salads. Summer fruit is a great way to add sweetness to a savory salad. Cubed peaches go great with arugula, spinach and romaine lettuce leaves plus a variety of dressings including Italian, Ceasar and vinaigrettes.
Top your waffles and pancakes with them. Dress up brunch with a few peach slices and a drizzle of maple syrup (you can also add whipped cream for a pretty dessert).

Cooking with Peaches

Eating peaches fresh is easy, but did you know they’re also delicious when used in your favorite recipes as well? Apart from jams and marmalades, peaches can be used to add flavor to cocktails (like a summer sangria), while a peach salsa or relish is a great accompaniment for savory dishes like pork tenderloin. Cooking peaches may seem intimidating, but it’s really easier than you might think. In terms of preparation, most often all you need to do is wash the fruit, peel it (peach skins tend to toughen when cooked) and remove the pit.

Here are a few common methods for cooking peaches:

How to Cook Peaches:

• Baking. From peach pie to peach cobbler, baking with peaches is always satisfying. Baking them on their own is easy, too…simply halve the pitted peach, place the halves cut-side up in a baking dish, add a dab of honey, syrup or other filling to the empty hollow, and bake at 350°F for thirty minutes. A sprinkle of cinnamon beforehand will add an extra-delectable flavor to the air, and the warmed baked peaches go deliciously with cream or ice cream.
Grilling. Prepare the peaches just as you would for baking, then add the halves to a clean, well-oiled grill pre-heated to medium. Grill cut-side down first before adding the filling (so the peach will form grill marks) for about four or five minutes or until the fruit starts to soften.
Poaching. In a saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add a cup of sugar, the juice from one lemon and a vanilla bean cut in half. Add eight halved and pitted peaches and simmer about five minutes or until tender.
Sautéing. Melt two tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Stir in 2 tablespoons of sugar. Add four pitted peaches, each cut into eight wedges. Cook and stir until sugar is dissolved and peaches are coated and warmed through (2-5 minutes). Serve immediately.
Stewing. Wash, peel and pit three pounds of peaches. Dice roughly and add to a medium pot. Add one cup of water, cover, and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Uncover and cook 25-30 minutes until soft. Stir in two tablespoons of honey and mash lightly.
