Good Nutrition News about Comice Pears

While all pears fall into the same category nutritionally, the Comice Pear stands head and shoulders above its well-known cousins, the Anjou, Bartlett and Bosc pear. The nutritional components may be similar, but the taste of the Comice is what sets it apart as superior.

Nutritionally, pears are commonly grouped with apples. The do, however, stand up very well in comparison to apples. Despite their juiciness, Comice pears contain approximately 18% fiber (significantly more than an apple). The entire pear is edible with the exception of the seed and stem. Considered by many to be hypo-allergenic, pears also contain vitamin C, pectin and boron.

Pears are frequently recommended by health care professionals as a high fiber, almost hypo-allergenic fruit. The Comice pear is a delicious source of dietary fiber when the skin is consumed along with the flesh. One pear provides 24% of the recommended daily allowance of fiber. Fiber contains no calories and helps sustain blood sugar levels and aids in digestion. Because pears are less likely than other fruits to produce an adverse reaction, they are frequently recommended as safe for infants.

Vitamin C is a necessary nutrient that helps regulate the body and prevent infections. Additionally, it helps to strengthen our immune system and allows the body to recover from colds more quickly. Studies have proven that vitamin C reduces many of the symptoms of the common cold such as runny nose, coughing and sore throat and promotes the healing of cuts and bruises. Comice pears are an excellent source of vitamin C.

Pectin is a water soluble fiber found in the cell walls of the Comice pear and other types of fruit. Pears are actually higher in pectin than apples and the benefits of pectin are numerous. The high levels of pectin found in the Comice make them effective in helping to lower cholesterol and could be beneficial in inhibiting or displaying toxicity to certain types of cancer.

Pears also contain high levels of boron. Boron helps the body to retain calcium which could possibly prevent or retard osteoporosis. Additionally, the Comice pear is a source of copper and potassium.

Based solely on its taste and appearance, the Comice pear would appear to be the perfect snack or addition to any diet. However, considering the nutritional benefits offered in the pear, one might consider the Comice a “superfood” not to be missed.
