A handful of healthcare professionals have made headlines in recent years by claiming that fruit juice is just as unhealthy as soda. According to these experts, orange juice contains more sugar and calories than soda. They also contend that the vitamins and nutrients in fresh fruit juice are often miscalculated. Do they have a point or are they simply trying to be provocative?

Either way, it is easy to understand why they have made headlines. The fruit juice industry in the United States is enormous. The Sunshine State is responsible for about ninety percent of the nation’s orange juice and most of its grapefruit juice. We’re talking about a 10-billion dollar industry that would undoubtedly suffer if it were discovered fruit juices are not as healthy as they seem.

Who’s right?

Like most things, the answer is somewhere in the middle. No, fruit juices are not as bad for us as soda. Yes, they do contain a lot of sugar, but they also contain calcium and vitamin C, soda does not.

However, it is important to note that healthcare professionals do have a point when it comes to the potency of these nutrients. Multiple studies have confirmed that fruit juices are not nearly as high in some nutrients as their labels suggest. We know, for instance, that vitamin C loses its potency over time. Some studies have found that the average container of OJ loses half of its vitamin C before it is
enjoyed by consumers.

The American love affair with fruit juices goes back to the Second World War. For obvious reasons, families had to cut back on household expenses. Fresh fruit juices were simply too expensive, but frozen orange juice was comparatively cheap. Frozen and mixed fruit juices soon became some of the most popular beverages in the nation. Unfortunately, they are not nearly as good for us as fresh fruit.

Fresh fruit has dietary fiber, fewer calories, and more phytonutrients than fruit juices. When we compare the average orange with a glass of its juice, the orange has only half the calories, five times the dietary fiber, and twice the vitamin C. Not to mention the fact that they are more filling. There is
really no comparison. As a healthy snack, few foods can compare to fruit baskets online.
