Lose Weight with Navel Oranges
In the critically acclaimed movie, Super Size Me, a documentary filmmaker turned himself into a fast food guinea pig when he consumed nothing but McDonald’s food for thirty days. By the end of the experiment/movie the subject/director, Morgan Spurlock, had gained nearly 25 pounds, increased his cholesterol to 230 (a dangerous level), and gained fat in his liver. It took him fourteen months to lose the weight.
Now, even Mr. Spurlock has admitted that his experiment was a bit sensational. Not only did he only eat fast food, but he always overate. However, there are valuable lessons to be learned from the documentary. The first and most obvious one is that eating fast food at every meal is not a healthy thing. Sadly, more Americans are eating this way than ever before. A shocking percentage of repeat McDonald’s customers are people who eat there several times a week. Is it any wonder why America is the fattest country on earth?
Like most documentaries, Super Size Me was short on solutions. But one thing that was repeated time and again is that too many Americans are snacking on these foods. Believe it or not, it is possible to eat fast food responsibly. No, we’re not saying it’s good for you, but a plain hamburger and a small serving of French fries every now and again probably won’t kill you.
The problem, as Mr. Spurlock demonstrated, is when people overeat at these restaurants or eat when they are not hungry. American snacking is out of control and it the number one reason why the nation is so fat.
Is there such a thing as healthy snacking? That’s hard to say. But we can say that there is such a thing as responsible snacking. Too many Americans consume hundreds of calories of snack foods after dinner, when they are not hungry. More often than not, they do this out of habit. Perhaps they snack on a bowl of buttery popcorn while they watch their favorite shows. Or maybe they like pretzels, or chips, or ice cream. Whatever the indulgence, it is growing the nation’s waistband.
There are really only two solutions to this modern hobby. They can either quit cold turkey or find healthier foods to snack. One healthy snack option is navel oranges. One of the world’s most popular fruits, navel oranges are grown mostly in Florida.
What makes them such a great snack? First, they are healthy. Navel oranges are fat, sodium, and cholesterol free. They are also low in calories with only seventy of them per serving. In addition to a full daily dosage of vitamin C, navel oranges are also a good source of dietary fiber. Studies have proven that fiber improves digestive health by encouraging regular bowel movements and that it may reduce the risk of heart disease and certain types of cancer..
