Mail Fruit for Any Occasion

When the first mail order fruit was sent it was shipped in baskets, often from business to business. The standard fruit basket became a popular corporate gift during the 1940s and 1950s. But it was seldom send by anyone outside the business community. The reason for this was simple: fruit baskets were expensive and they were designed for large groups of people, like office workers.

Smaller, more affordable fruit baskets did not become popular until shipping rates came down a bit a few decades later. Individuals were then free to mail fruit on special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, and during the holidays. But because of it weight, fruit baskets were still expensive to ship. For this reason, flowers remained the most popular gift to send through the mail.

Then the internet came along. Like thousands of other products, the internet has had a profound effect on personal shipments of fruit. In fact, the price of the average fruit basket has been nearly cut in half over the past decade. Instead of shelling out a hundred dollars or more, consumers can now place online orders for as little as twenty dollars, not including shipping and handling.

How did they get the price so low? Like most online or virtual businesses, companies that mail fruit save money because they don’t need a traditional brick and mortar store to sell their wares. All they need is a website, a fruit distributor, a small sales staff, and a reliable shipping service. And with the money they save on rent, electricity, employees, etc, they can lower prices and still make a healthy profit.

What should you look for in a fruit basket? Because they offer huge price discounts, some online sellers choose to cut a few corners. The most common complain of online buyers is that most sellers don’t offer a wide selection. They might have a dozen or so baskets from which to choose and that’s it. Not to mention the fact they most of the smaller sellers do not permit substitutions. This means that you will not be able to customize your basket.

What to do? As a general rule, the companies that offer a limited number of fruit basket choices often specialize in another product. Typically, they are online florists who want to offer their customers other options. That is why we strongly suggest searching for companies that focus only on fruit.

If possible, it is best to find a company that actually grows their own fruit, such as Florida Oranges. This ensures quality, freshness, and lower prices. After all, when a company buys fruit from a distributor, they often have to arrange the fruit themselves before they mail the baskets. This is an extra added expense they will invariably pass on to you, the customer.
