Make Kid Friendly Healthy Summer Treats with Valencia Oranges

If you want to make sure your family and your kids eat healthy throughout the summer use super sweet Valencia oranges to make kid friendly summer treats that everyone in the house will love. You can make these treats with your kids to give them fun projects to do when it’s too warm to play outside. You can also have the kids use Valencia oranges, grapefruit and other seasonal fruits to make their own treats at birthday parties, picnics and other summer get togethers. Many of these treats are portable and are appropriate to bring to the park or the pool when you want to make sure your kids have a healthy snack and don’t eat ice cream, sugary slushies, or other high calorie and high fat treats that are usually available to kids during the summer months. Here are several mom tested and kid approved healthy treats made from Valencia oranges for you to try with your kids this summer:

Creamsicles – Kids love the creamy citrus flavor of creamsicles but creamsicles bought in the store are full of preservatives and sugar. You can easily make a healthy version of this super refreshing summer treat by mixing the juice from several fresh Valencia oranges with about a cup of half and half. Add a scoop of vanilla frozen yogurt if you want the finished creamsicles to have an extra creamy texture. Mix the juice and cream in a pot and simmer them together until they are blended. Pour into plastic popsicle molds and freeze. When the mixture is frozen you’ll have a healthy, low calorie version of this popular summer treat. If you’re having a party you can also add the frozen creamsicle mixture to punch to keep the punch cold and flavorful throughout the party.

Natural slushies – This easy to make version of the high calorie, sugar filled slush will make your kids happy and make you happy about what they’re eating. All you need is some shaved ice, the juice from some fresh Valencia oranges, fruit juice and food coloring. Experiment with the food coloring to get fun colors that will appeal to your kids. Place about a cup of shaved ice in a freezer bag and add the fresh orange juice and whatever fruit juice you want to add for color or additional flavor. Also add a few drops of food coloring to make it fun. Seal the bag tightly and have the kids shake the bags very quickly. When the mixture starts to form a slushie consistency it’s done.
