Navel Oranges for Better Health

The Food Pyramid was introduced in 1992 as a simple and effective guide to proper nutrition. Developed by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the pyramid lets people know how many serving from each of the six food groups they should consume each day. Arguably the most neglected food group in the pyramid is the fruit group.

What’s so great about fruit? According to a recent survey, only about a third of Americans consume two to four serving of fruit each day. But fruit is more important than it has ever been, especially for Americans. Give us a moment to explain.

First, we must acknowledge the growing problem of obesity. The US has been the fattest nation on earth for many years and the epidemic is directly responsible for the increase in medical costs. Obesity is now the number one form of preventable death in the States, ahead of smoking!

We bring up obesity because Americans clearly have a problem with snacking. We snack when we watch the big game. We snack when we watch our favorite shows. We even snack when we don’t have anything better to do. It is this snacking and what we are snacking on that is killing us.

But what if we snacked on navel oranges instead of chips? Would our bellies, hips, and thighs expand? It’s hard to say, but the answer is probably no, or at least less so. For one thing, navel oranges are low in calories and they are quite good for the human body. With high levels of vitamin C, folate, dietary fiber, and potassium, there are few foods that are better for us.

So, why don’t people snack on fruit? Well, some do. Many cultures around the world prefer fruit to greasy potato chips or pretzels. Not surprisingly, they are typically quite healthy. They also have a lot more energy.

Think about it for a moment. How does the human body respond to heavy, greasy foods? Even fast food junkies freely admit that greasy foods with loads of carbohydrates wreak havoc on their systems. More often than not, they end up on the toilet wondering why they ordered an extra large portion of chili fries.

What are we trying to say? In short, our bodies are machines. They are designed to process certain foods and to merely tolerate others. Natural foods that grow from the ground, on a tree, or on a vine are what man was meant to eat.

We don’t want to get biblical on you, but there’s a reason why we generally feel better when we eat navel oranges, rather than fast food. Our bodies are designed to extract vital nutrients from natural foods, not from something that was designed in a lab.
