Red Grapefruit: It’s For More Than Just Eating!

By: The Hale Groves Team | On: | Category: Fruit Facts

Red grapefruit stands tall in the world of citrus, there’s no doubt. Besides its refreshingly tangy-tart taste, it’s loaded with a host of nutritional goodies: Vitamin C, potassium, folate, thiamin, antioxidants, lycopene, fiber and more – plus red grapefruit is low in fat. But did you know that red grapefruit can be used to beautify the outside of our bodies as well as it nourishes the inside?

Natural Red Grapefruit Face Wash

Your skin will soak up the goodness of the red grapefruit in this fragrant and easy-to-make face wash, plus you’ll save money by making your own facial cleanser instead of buying an expensive brand at the department store. Because of its acidity and astringency, this red grapefruit face wash benefits skin that is normal to oily. Avoid using on dry skin.

Peel and scoop out half of a red grapefruit, taking out any seeds and placing it in a microwavable bowl. Add a teaspoon of olive oil and one-quarter teaspoon of borax (usually found next to the laundry soaps at the grocery store). Mix well and then heat the red grapefruit mixture for about two minutes in your microwave. (You can also do this in a regular saucepan on the stove.) Do not boil. Allow to cool and strain through a tea strainer or through cheesecloth. When you are ready to clean your face, simply wet it first with tepid water, smooth the red grapefruit mixture over your face, avoiding the eyes. Massage it in gently, then rinse well. Pat your face dry with a soft, clean towel. Your skin will feel refreshed and soft! Store any of the remaining red grapefruit face wash in an airtight container in your refrigerator.

Red Grapefruit All-Natural Body Soap

This red grapefruit soap leaves your skin silky smooth, fragrant and refreshed! You don’t have to do any boiling or go through other complicated soap-making steps. In fact, this red grapefruit body soap is really a shortcut way to have the grapefruit benefits in a store-bought soap.

Using any unscented liquid soap you’ve bought, mix that with a quarter cup of water, one teaspoon regular salt and two tablespoons glycerin (glycerin can be found at almost any pharmacy) in a bowl. Add 10 drops of red grapefruit essential oil (this can found online). Mix well and pour into a clean, pump dispenser. (You can use the one your store-bought liquid soap came in.) If you can’t find red grapefruit essential oil, pour one quarter cup strained, red grapefruit juice into the other ingredients and mix well. If you want to thicken your red grapefruit liquid soap, simply add salt a little at a time until it reaches your desired thickness.
