So What’s A Tangelo, Anyway?
You’ve heard of the orange in all its varieties (navel, mandarin, Valencia, et cetera) and the different kinds of grapefruit (pink, ruby red, and so on.) You’ve probably also heard about the tangerine and of course traditional citrus fruits like lemons, limes, and others. But what’s a tangelo?
The small, simple, but no less healthy fruit the tangelo isn’t new and it’s not fancy. But it’s a surprising bit of succulent fruit fun that’s got its own cool set of advantages. Some might even call it the citrus fruit family’s secret weapon.
A Tangelo is a hybrid fruit
The sturdy little tangelo isn’t one kind of fruit, but two. Actually, it’s a hybrid, or blending, of the tangerine and the pomelo, otherwise known as the jabong or Chinese grapefruit. Pomelos are found throughout Southeast Asia, where they’re extremely valued both for their nutritional value and for their delicious sweet taste. Pomelos taste very much like a sweeter version of a grapefruit, so they’re often served as a dessert or a palate cleanser in larger meals throughout Asia.
A Tangelo is a very old kind of fruit
Tangelos sound like the crazy concoction of modern botanists, but in fact they’re extremely old, dating back more than 3500 years. They’ve been used extensively in both everyday cooking and fine cuisine ever since, but have only recently come to Western nations.
Tangelos have advantages other fruits don’t.
Tangelos are about the size of a baseball, and their skin is easier to peel than that of an orange or grapefruit. They’re sweet taste is also ideal for those who’d prefer a less powerful taste than those provided by grapefruits and orange’s tart flavorings.
A Great Part of Any Assorted Gift Basket
Assorted gift baskets often include a huge variety of delicious citrus fruits, including the loveable little tangelo. In fact, gift baskets and gift baskets for the holidays are in many ways the “official” debut of the tangelo for many people, as it takes its place among oranges, grapefruit, and tangerines in every delicious and surprisingly attractive assortment.
These gift baskets also come in a variety of styles, sizes, and color schemes, so a gift basket for the holidays makes a perfect gift, centerpiece, or design accent to any celebration, reunion, or office party. Many online boutiques deliver assorted gift baskets and citrus fruit baskets to all parts of the United States and even some parts of Canada.
