Tangerines: The Cure To A Stuffy Nose

By: The Hale Groves Team | On: | Category: Healthy Eating

Okay citrus fruit has been cited as having any number of fabulous health benefits. To some extent, all citrus fruit can provide the vitamins and antioxidants that will help in preventing and controlling a variety of cancers, increase your immune system and some can even clear up your skin with their hydrating properties. But clear a stuffy nose? That’s exactly the claim of the Sunburst Tangerine.

This tangerine which is available for a short time early in the season from November to early January, is actually a cross between the Robinson and Osceola oranges. Several studies have suggested that the aroma from this particular tangerine acts as a natural decongestant. So if you have a clogged up head, try eating one of these before you go to bed and odds are you’ll get a good night’s sleep and maybe not even snore.

Pretty amazing huh? What’s even more amazing is the incredible taste of this premium tangerine. The flesh is a dark red and delectably sweet and the aroma, well it cleans out your nose. Actually it smells fantastic and clears up your head.

So where can you find these amazing tangerines? The surest way to know you are getting Sunburst tangerines is to order them for a fruit basket company. If you are lucky enough to live in an area where you can get them fresh in the store, here are a few tips to ensure you get the best.

The peel should have a slight pebble texture and be so thin that you can see the outline of the segments inside. Press your thumb on the flower end (opposite of the stem end) and the skin should pop back up once you release your thumb. If you feel any hard spots you probably have a fruit that has dried out inside. If you see any light blue powder that’s a sign that the fruit could have mold. In fact any tangerine in the same bin as a tangerine with mold will probably get mold. The old saying about “one bad apple” applies to tangerines as well.

If the skin looks a little greenish don’t worry about it. This is a process called regreening and it’s all about the temperature and the time the tangerine stays on the tree not about the quality of the fruit. Lastly it should feel like it weighs more than it should for its size. Tangerines with lots of juice are going to be firm and have some heft.

Sunburst tangerines are a great treat even if you don’t have a head cold. If you can find them, get them. If not order them from a reputable citrus dealer.
