What Are Temple Oranges?
“Aren’t all oranges the same?”
“An orange is an orange.”
“There is no difference between a California orange and a Florida orange.”
These statements are some common refrains that people make….inaccurately. No, not all oranges and the same. Where they grow and how they grow contribute to several significant differences among oranges and their “cousins” such as tangerines. Recently, more people have become aware of an excellent type the orange known as the Temple Orange. But, what is this unique fruit and why do people rave about it so much?
Well, let’s try and explore what it is about Temple Oranges that make them so unique.
It has been said that these particular oranges are a hybrid cross between a tangerine and a traditional orange. (Some refer to Temple Oranges as “tangors” and claim they are a unique fruit and not really oranges at all.) Temple Oranges are indigenous to the state of Florida and the Sunshine State is the primary location these oranges grow naturally. Currently, Florida exports thousands upon thousands of these oranges to fervent consumers all over the world. Generally, supermarket customers will need to wait for the winter to purchase these oranges since they are in season from December through March. So, if you miss out on purchasing them during the winter, you have to wait until next winter to get them!
The physical features of these Temple Oranges are quite distinct as well. These oranges grow on rather large citrus trees and this allows many of the oranges to grow to an impressive size. While some might assume these Temple Oranges would be tough to peel based on their size, this is not an accurate assessment. One of the most distinct features of these oranges is the fact they are easy to peel. This certainly makes them appealing to those that wish to rush in and eat the orange rather than struggling to peel it!
Why would anyone wish to rush in and eat a Temple Orange? The answer to this question is fairly obvious: the taste is among the best and most distinct of all the Florida Citrus fruits. Temple Oranges are known for their extremely sweet taste which makes them among the most desired of all the Florida oranges.
It should come as no surprise that Temple Oranges as so popular. They are among the finest fruits that the Sunshine State produces and their demand will always be great.
