What is Navel Orange Essential Oil?

According to a recent report, Americans spend more than ten billion dollars on health and beauty products each year. Though cosmetics and hair care are expensive, most of the money is spent on skincare. It makes perfect sense, of course, seeing as how the skin is the body’s largest organ. It is also the only organ that does battle with the elements on a daily basis.

Do these creams, ointments and elixirs actually work? In an attempt to answer this question, we will focus on one of the newest and hottest trends in the skincare industry, essential fruit oils. At last count, there were dozens of popular fruit extracts from apple to lemon to banana. But for reasons we will discuss shortly, the most sought after oils are derived from citrus fruit. And the most popular of them all is the navel orange extract.

What makes the essential oil from the navel orange so special? In short, they are one of the most popular orange varieties on earth and they have a distinct aroma that most consumers find invigorating. Perhaps that is why they are one of the most common ingredients in modern skin creams.

Of course, there are other reasons to purchase skin creams besides their fragrances. Because the skin acts as a natural shield against the elements, it absorbs an incredible amount of dirt each day. Skin creams are used to remove this dirt and to properly hydrate the skin. Most of the top skincare products are cleaners/moisturizers.

Like most citrus extracts, essential oil of the navel orange can also leave the skin feeling healthy, clean and refreshed. This is due to the ascorbic acid in the fruit that may make the skin tingle a bit. Most people associate this sensation with cleanliness, even if it is nothing more than a natural reaction to the acids.

Lastly, we want to take a moment to discuss the most controversial claim of skin care creams that contain navel orange exacts and that is that they can reduce the signs of aging. The reason why millions of consumers buy into these claims is that there is actually some scientific basis for them, at least in theory.

The theory is quite simple. Citrus fruits like the navel orange contain high amounts of Vitamin C, which works as powerful antioxidant in the body. An antioxidant is a helpful little molecule that fights implacable pests known as free radicals. These free radicals do little more than roam around the body damaging healthy cells. Now, here is where the theory comes into play. Many prominent professionals believe that consuming foods that are high in antioxidants can prevent this damage, which may reduce the risk of certain kinds of cancer and even slow the aging process.

But does the same go for antioxidants that are applied to the skin? There is a definite dearth of evidence to support such a claim. In fact, most chemists are quick to point out that Vitamin C is oxygen-sensitive and that most of its theoretical benefits are rendered null and void the moment it is exposed to the air.
