Which Citrus Fruit Is Right For You?
The family of fresh fruits that fall under the name “citrus fruits” include a bigger variety of tastes, flavors and textures than you might imagine. Citrus fruits are famous for their healthy benefits already, and for inspiring a huge array of candies and other sweet treats that mimic their delicious flavors without bringing their healthy aspects along for the ride.
But if you’re just beginning to pursue a healthier lifestyle and want to include fresh citrus fruit as part of your daily dietary regimen – for example, using oranges to replace snacks or breakfast or lunch foods – you should consider what kind of citrus fruit will give you the most taste and health satisfaction. It’s maybe not the most important decision you’ll ever make, but it’ll help you strategize your health regimen while at the same time letting you figure out an important dietary preference.
Oranges
The big man on the citrus fruit campus, oranges actually come in several different varieties. Florida oranges are known for their sweet taste and easy to peel rind, as well as a pulpy texture. Their friendly size and relative fragility make them a great snack choice for children.
The Clementine orange is smaller than the Florida orange and has a deeper orange color. Clementines are very juicy and easy to peel, but they have a short peak season, meaning the demand for them regularly outpaces their supply.
The Mandarin orange, sometimes called a mandarine, is a special kind of orange that only grows on the mandarin orange tree. Mandarins are often crossed with other forms of oranges to produce rare hybrids such as the tangor.
Honeybells
Blending the grapefruit and the tangerine into one great taste, the Honeybell is a member of the hybrid fruit group known as tangelos. Honeybells come with an abundant supply of their juice, and they’re easy to peel as well.
Ruby Red Grapefruit
The jumbo-sized grapefruit gets a reddish tinge with this variety, but still comes loaded with tart juices and a deliciously tender pulp. Ruby Red Grapefruits are mostly grown in Texas, but varieties from Florida and Arizona are also commonplace. They’re packed tight with vitamins and minerals, and they’re an excellent source of fiber.
Tangerines
The tangerine is a variety of the Mandarin orange, with a taste that’s far less tart. Tangerines are smaller than oranges, so they’re easy to carry and keep stored.
