The Simple Honeybell Offers So Much To Love

Though not as widely known as some other kinds of citrus fruits, the Honeybell is nonetheless possibly the most versatile and the most enticing. A unique variety of hybrid fruit, the Honeybell tangelo has risen from simple beginnings to become the fruit of choice for fruit connoisseurs worldwide.

A Honeybell Is Born

The Honeybell is actually a recent innovation in botany and agricultural engineering. Farmers working in Florida during the 1930s first created the Honeybell by cross-breeding the Duncan grapefruit with the Dancy tangerine. By mixing the two very dissimilar fruits, the Honeybell’s creators possibly hoped to produce a juicier version of the tangerine that wasn’t as bulky as the grapefruit. This “best of both worlds” approach was a complete success, and before the USDA station in Orlando approved the fruit for public consumption.

At the time of its creation, the Honeybell was known as the Minneola tangelo, a name that’s still sometimes used to denote its place of origin. Minneola is now a community just outside the sprawling Orlando metropolis. The name Honeybell stuck though, owing at least partially to the bell-shaped divot at one end, from which the fruit’s stem hangs to its tree.

The Honeybell is the Juiciest Citrus Fruit

Most people when trying a Honeybell tangelo for the first time are amazed at how much juice each fruit produces. Each Honeybell fruit sample carries an incredible amount of juice, so much so that some Honeybell fans call it “the fruit that needs a glass.” Perhaps even more surprising, the skin of the Honeybell is also surprisingly easy to peel. Many people are able to skin the Honeybell using only their fingers. The pulp inside is succulent and chewy.

The Honeybell Has Lots of Vitamins

Honeybell fruits are also packed with vitamins, including the all important Vitamin C that will help your body feel better and live longer. Honeybells also contain important minerals and nutrients including calcium, zinc, and folate, which can benefit the body in myriad ways. Honeybells also contain a rich supply of fiber, to help better regulate your body’s digestive system. With so much to gain besides their great taste, you can see why Honeybells are the favorite fruit of people that love to eat fruit.
