The Florida Orange: A Bounty of Healthy Sweetness

Florida Orange growers produce several varieties of oranges to please even the most discriminating taste buds. Due to the state’s ideal citrus-growing weather, soil conditions and knowledge gleaned from more than 150 years of producing the perfect Florida orange, consumers across the nation enjoy the very best of America’s favorite citrus fruit.

The Valencia Florida Orange: Summer’s Only Available Orange

Growers offer the one Florida orange available during the summertime, the prized, juice-filled Valencia, from the first of March through mid June. It’s worth the wait, however, due to an unsurpassed sweetness orange lovers crave. To get this extra sweetness, Florida orange growers leave the fruit longer on the tree, allowing it to develop to its fullest maturity. Nearly seedless and loaded with vitamin-packed juice, this Florida orange makes an exceptional beverage for those who prefer to squeeze their own fresh drink for breakfast – or any other time! In addition to being known as the perfect orange for juicing, the Valencia is excellent for high-nutrition, almost-no-fat snacking when eaten by hand and can also be frozen for year-round enjoyment.

Temple Oranges – Uniquely Delicious

A large, tart, yet very sweet Florida orange that offers an enticing tanginess along with easy peeling, the Temple orange comes from a hybrid marriage between the mandarin and sweet orange. Ideal growing conditions make this Florida orange a favorite among those who prefer a deeply-colored citrus that features a unique flavor and fragrance all its own. Easy to section, this very juicy orange comes in an oval shape with a pebbled-looking peel. Temple oranges can be enjoyed from the middle of January through the first part of March.

Navel Oranges – Hailed as the “Best Eating Orange in the World”

Known for their “belly-button” at the bud end of their primary fruits, navel oranges surpass all other oranges in consumer popularity. Firm and heavy, the navel is a Florida orange known for its deep, richly hued color and is picked at the peak of its maturity for fullest flavor. One reason the navel retains its standing as a favorite is due to its seedless characteristic, a benefit of its cutting-and-grafting reproduction that makes this type of Florida orange identical to its original ancestor, a Brazilian mutation occurring in 1820. Florida orange growers offer navels from November throughout May, with the months of January through March as the orchard growers’ peak supply period.
