Snack on Navel Oranges
America is the fattest nation on earth. A full third of her population is officially obese and two-thirds are merely overweight. Not surprisingly, expanding waistbands lead to a series of serious conditions and diseases. Since 1980, cancer, heart disease, and cases of type II diabetes have all been on the rise. Why is America so fat?
We could argue and point fingers all day and night and it wouldn’t bring us any closer to a single cause, because there isn’t just one! There are several. But in this article we will focus on what we believe is the most likely cause of America’s weight problem. We are speaking of course about snacking.
No matter what you eat, consuming at least three meals a day makes perfect sense. Breakfast gives us the calories we need to get moving at the start of the day; lunch helps us push through the midday malaise; and supper helps us sleep through the night, since our bodies’ burn calories when we sleep. But snacking is completely and totally superfluous. There is absolutely no need for it. People often talk about empty calories and use the term to disparage any type of unhealthy food. But the truth is that calories are only empty if they are consumed when we don’t need them.
Snacking is a relatively new phenomenon in human history. In days of yore, people ate food whenever and wherever they could find it because food was scarce and often expensive. In modern times, however, food is plentiful and comparatively cheap. This gives humans, especially if they are Americans, the ability to eat even when they aren’t hungry, hence snacking.
Unfortunately, there is really no way to put an end to this habit. Most Americans have grown accustomed to snacking. It’s almost Pavlovian. Whenever the average American watches his favorite shows, he reaches for his favorite salty or sweat snacks, whether he is hungry or not.
In short, we cannot stop snacking. But what we can do is find other, more nutritious foods to snack on. Fresh fruit, for example, is an excellent substitute. Which fruits should you choose? We like navel oranges.
There are several reasons why navel oranges are a great choice for snack lovers. The first is that they are the most popular eating orange on earth. This does not necessarily mean that they are the best, but it means that they can be found in nearly any supermarket at nearly any time of year.
Because of their loose skin, navel oranges are also easy to peel and they are chockfull of vitamins and minerals. In addition to the daily dosage of vitamin C, navel oranges are also a good source of fiber and folic acid. Not to mention the fact that they are low in calories and fat and cholesterol free.
