Healthy Snacks: Temple Oranges
A few years ago, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) published a report that should have opened a few eyes on this side of the Atlantic. Among other things, the researchers found that Americans consume more calories than almost any other nationality. The final figure was 3,790 calories each day. When the report was first published in 1980, Americans consumed just 3180 calories daily.
So, why are we eating 610 calories more than we did just three decades ago? Has work become more strenuous? No, it has not. In fact, quite the opposite is true. Since the 1980s, more and more Americans are working jobs where little or no physical activity is required. More often than not, they sit in front of computer screens and don’t lift anything heavier a pencil all day. Why then do we need more calories?
The truth is that no one knows. Calories provide energy; they are the fuel on which our bodies run. But there is no need, absolutely none, for our current superfetation. According to most nutritionists, Americans are consuming about five hundred or so empty and unnecessary calories each day. As a result, we are presently the fattest nation on earth. What can we do about it?
Snacking has been a problem in America for decades. As unhealthy as fast food meals are, at least they are regular meals. Snacking by its very definition connotes empty and unnecessary eating. Popcorn, potato chips, pretzels, and ice cream may not be a part of the food pyramid, but they arguably more popular than the other four.
We offer Temple oranges as a solution. Why Temple oranges? For one thing, fruit is the original snack food. Whether enjoyed whole or in juice form, fruit can be consumed/imbibed at any time of the day or night. Not to mention the fact that it is filling. One of the reasons why people snack so often is because snack foods don’t fill us up. Can you imagine, for example, eating 1000 calories of steak? Depending on the cut, it could be over 24 ounces. Now, imagine eating 1000 calories of potato chips. Most Americans could do that standing on their heads.
As a natural snack, Temple oranges fill you up and can help tie you over in between meals. A bag of potato chips or pretzels cannot and will not do the same. And when it comes to vitamins and minerals, few foods can compare with Temple oranges. They are high in vitamin C, dietary fiber, and potassium. Not to mention the fact that they are fat and cholesterol free. It is no surprise that oranges are one of the most popular fruits on the planet. We can only hope and pray that Americans get the message.
