Give a Basket of Fruit Instead of a Basket of Candy This Easter
Keep your New Year’s Resolution to lose this weight this year by skipping the candy filled Easter baskets and using a basket of fruit as an Easter basket this year. Healthy citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits are naturally sweet and delicious, and are just as much of a treat as chocolate candy. Your family may be surprised when they find baskets of fruit instead of baskets of candy but they won’t be disappointed with baskets of sweet oranges and other fruits. You can even use a basket of tropical fruit as an Easter basket and use some of the exotic fruit to make smoothies, milkshakes and other drinks.
Traditional Easter baskets are tasty but are also a contributor to weight gain and childhood obesity.
Giving your kids a big basket stuffed with sugar filled, high calorie chocolate candy is never a good idea, even with limits on how much they can eat at one time. The fact is that eating a lot of candy is one of the reasons why so many kids struggle with their weight. Allowing your kids to indulge in a huge basket of chocolate treats can also send the wrong message about healthy eating. If you want to teach your kids to eat sweets responsibly a basket of fruit like oranges or grapefruits that also have a few gourmet chocolate candies included is a much better way to teach kids to make responsible food choices.
Studies have shown that the eating habits kids learn from their parents will stay with them throughout the rest of their lives, so if you don’t teach your kids to eat healthy now they may struggle and end up making bad or unhealthy food choices later on. This year you can teach them how to eat healthy, even on a holiday, by giving citrus fruit baskets with just a few candies in them so that the kids learn it’s better to eat fruit than candy. Some parents institute a rule that the kids must eat one piece of fruit for every piece of candy that they eat. Childhood obesity experts praise that approach as one that teaches kids that they can have candy in moderation if they choose primarily healthy foods the rest of the time.
This year you can keep you own diet on track by not keeping a lot of chocolate in the house and teach your kids about healthy eating by giving a basket of fruit as an Easter basket.
