Question to Steve Hale Jr: What makes Florida Navel Oranges so unique?
Answer: What makes our Navels so unique has to do with the extra benefits Mother Nature bestows on us- our year-round warm, moist climate, abundant water and citrus-perfect soil.
The Navel Orange gets its name from the characteristic blossom end. Our Navels are deep yellow, with a thin, pebble rind that is easy to peel and section. They are also distinguished by their extra large size. In fact, a few years back we had one Navel Orange that was 16.5 inches around and weighed 2.3 pounds!
The biggest difference though, is in the flavor. Our Indian River Navels are sweet and juicy. They are a favorite hand-eating variety, and especially good in salads and fruit cups. While other Navels have much thicker skin, Florida Navel Oranges give you more for your money because their extra size means more edible, delicious nutritious goodness.
