The Polly Hale Newsletter June 1996: Steve’s Corner, How long does it take before a newly planted fruit tree produces a reasonable yield?
It normally takes from five to seven years before a young tree produces a significant quality of fruit. In the earlier years any fruit that is produced is removed so the available nutrients will go to developing the tree itself rather than the fruit. Even then the first crop harvested may be of questionable quality and this is watched closely.
Once a new tree becomes established and is producing cared for it will produce abundant fruit for as long as 30 to 40 years when it begins to decline in annual output.
