What is mulled wine?
Christmas is one of the most favorite times of year for many of us out there. This is the time when friends and love ones come together to spend time together, have fun and share their blessings. In so saying, I can?t think of a cozier way to cuddle up and count them than with a brewing mug of mulled wine.
If you?ve never had it, hot mulled wine is a warming, aromatic beverage that is delectable to sip on winter days or cold weather. It tastes like a spicy, yet fruity red wine with a hit of brandy and a dash of holiday magic. It is a piping hot holiday punch that smells of cloves and cinnamon meant to warm the belly and spirit at the same time.
Mulled wine is an absolute must-make recipe. It is wonderful to make a big pot for your Christmas holiday party and ladle mug fulls of it as guests arrive. It is festive, easy to make in bulk and definitely delightful for the guests.
How to make mulled wine?
Prep Time: 5 Mins
Cook Time: 15 Mins
1 (750 ml) bottle of dry red wine
1 navel orange, sliced into rounds
1 apple, sliced into rounds
8 whole cloves
2 cinnamon sticks
2 star anise
2-4 tablespoons sugar, honey, or maple syrup to taste (or your desired
sweetener)
Optional add-in: 1/4 cup brandy (or your favorite liqueur)
Optional garnish: rosemary
1. In a heavy pot or saucepan mix all the ingredients. Heat the mixture just barely to a simmer, over medium-high heat. Make sure not to boil the mulled wine or it will boil off the alcohol. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and let the wine simmer for 15 minutes or up to 3 hours.
2. Strain, ladle in mugs and serve with your desired garnishing.
