Tips for Creating Great Fruit Baskets
Fruit baskets make wonderful holiday gifts. They are also great party favors and wedding favors. Giving fruit baskets as gifts to business acquaintances, neighbors, or other people that you know socially is a great idea because the person receiving the basket may have dietary restrictions that you don’t know about which would make a gift of candy or baked goods inappropriate. But almost everyone can enjoy fruit. As an added bonus creating a polished looking fruit basket is inexpensive although it will look like an expensive gift.
When you are going to create a fruit basket the first thing that you need to think about is what kind of fruit to use in the basket. What kind of fruits you choose for your basket should depend on things like what fruits are in season, whether or not the basket is being shipped in the mail, and what kinds of fruits are appropriate for the person that will be receiving the basket. For example, if the gift is for a family then filling it with exotic fruits might not be such a great idea. If you’re giving the basket as a family gift then filling it with lots of citrus fruits, berries, and other family friendly fruits is a good idea. But if you’re giving the basket to a friend who loves exotic foods then a gift basket full of exotic fruits would be a perfect gift. It’s important to tailor the fruits that you use to the taste of the person that you’re giving it to.
Some fruits are better than others to use in fruit baskets. If the basket is not going to be given or eaten right away then make sure you use fruits that won’t spoil quickly. Citrus fruits, especially Florida oranges, are one of the most popular fruits to use in fruit baskets. Citrus fruits are great for fruit baskets because the outside rind protects the fruit from bumps and bruises and keeps the fruit looking nice. The bright colors of citrus fruits also add a lot of pizzazz to fruit baskets and contrast nicely with the colors of fruits like apple. Citrus fruits also last for a long time. Other popular fruits for fruit baskets include pomegranates, grapes, berries, pineapples, and apples.
Fruit baskets don’t need to have a lot of extra decoration. The colors of the fruit should be the main focus of the basket and the main decoration. Select a nice basket and finish off the basket with a pretty bow or ribbon and you will have a gorgeous, inexpensive, and appreciated gift. If you want to add a little flair to your fruit basket try making a theme basket. For example, you could make a “Good Morning” basket filled with oranges, grapefruits, and whole melons. Include a few decorative sheets of paper or fancy recipe cards with recipes for Breakfast Fruit Salad or smoothies on them. You could also make a “Dessert” basket filled with lemons, oranges, pears, and berries. Include a recipe for a delicious yogurt fruit dip or sherbet too.
