Make Honeybells Your January Gift of Health and Fun

The Honeybell citrus fruit comes into season during the late weeks of December and the early weeks of January, arriving just during or immediately after the holiday season. They’re not quite early enough for most of the holiday season, yet they make a fantastic way to brighten your house and liven up your diet in the weeks following the holidays and New Year’s.

Honeybells are both delicious and full of important vitamins, minerals, and important nutrients. If you’re looking to eat better after the holidays and even to get in shape and lose weight, the Honeybell tangelo just might be the perfect way to do both while still keeping flavor and texture into your eating and snacking regimens.

The Mystery of the Honeybell Tangelo

Most people assume the Honeybell is an orange, and for good reasons. The Honeybell is grown in Florida, it yields juice just like an orange, and its delicious tart taste sort of resembles the tartness of a particularly vibrant orange. Yet the Honeybell isn’t actually an orange at all, but rather an exciting and bold mixture of the grapefruit and the tangerine.

The Honeybell was invented in the 1930s in Florida, by farmers looking to combine the heartiness and juice-rich grapefruit with the easy to peel convenience of the tangerine. They end result was the Minneola tangelo, which the USDA released to the public in 1931. Overtime the name Honeybell became more popular for the new fruit, owing to its sweet texture and the bell-shaped stem at its one end.

Today the Honeybell remains one of the most popular citrus fruits available, prized by both fruit connoisseurs and the general public for its versatility, unbelievably delicious taste, and convenient use.

Honeybells Are Perfect For In-between Holidays.

The Honeybell makes a great way to liven up the weeks between New Year’s and Valentine’s Days, weeks of cold winter chill that could use some livening up. Many online citrus fruit basket companies deliver baskets of Honeybells nationwide, making them available in a variety of designs and motifs.

Finally, Honeybells are also great citrus fruits for children, offering plenty of sweet juice as well as an easy to peel rind. Children can enjoy the Honeybell’s great taste without needing a knife or peeler, meaning parents can appreciate them as the “safety fruit” on top of everything else.
