Why Pregnant Women Need Florida Oranges

If you were to ask an expectant mother what she wants the most, a boy or a girl, a lot of times they will tell you that they do not care if they get a boy or a girl. They just want the baby to be healthy. Although some probably do have a preference about the gender of their child, all are sincere about wanting a healthy child. But a healthy child begins with a healthy baby, and Florida oranges can help make a healthy pregnancy a reality.

While it is true that many birth defects are genetic and will happen no matter what the mother consumes during her pregnancy, there are other diseases and defects that can definitely be avoided with the right vitamins and minerals. Neural tube defects such as spina bifida can have their risk narrowed or possibly eliminated with daily consumption of Florida oranges. This is because Florida oranges have been shown to have folic acid (also known as folate to some) which helps lessen the chance that a child is born with spina bifida.

The important thing to know about this is that the risk of neural tube birth defects is during the first six to eight weeks of pregnancy. Many women do not even realize they are pregnant until four to six weeks after they are first with child. If this is the case, then the chance to consume enough folic acid to avoid spina bifida or other neural tube birth defects is very narrow. For this reason, all women of child bearing age (especially those who are actively trying to get pregnant) should already be taking a daily dose of folic acid.

The problem with this is that folic acid is one of those things that is not easy to find in vitamin and mineral supplements. When you do find folic acid, it is sometimes only a trace amount. The best way to get folic acid is through food like Florida oranges. The great news is that when you consume Florida oranges, you get more than just folic acid. Florida oranges also provide lots of Vitamin C and B vitamins which also help you have a healthy pregnancy.

Eating Florida oranges daily can keep you healthy even if you are not trying to get pregnant. But if you think there is even a chance you might want to have a baby later, there is no time like the present to start consuming folate. Since some variety of Florida oranges are available almost year round (from November to June), it is easy to get Florida oranges and all of their health benefits into your daily routine. Whether by juice, eating whole or as a part of a recipe, Florida oranges can help you and your future child enjoy a long life together.
