The polly Hale Newsletter December 1996: Steve’s Corner, What is it in indian River County, Florida that makes our citrus so superior in quality and so sweet to the taste?
In answering, I always talk about the climate, the water, the ocean breeze, and the soil. The Indian River Citrus Region is a narrow, 200-mile-long strip of land along the edge of the Atlantic Ocean in Florida, from Daytona to West Palm Beach. The soil is underlaid by the Anastasia formation, which is made up of Coquina Limestone. This provides our grapefruit and orange tree root systems with usually rich minerals and nutrients during their growth cycle. These are the elements that are most responsible for the superior quality of our citrus, unequaled anywhere else in the world.
So, between these rich, available nutrients, a 2 to 3 foot water table which provides the trees with sufficient moisture, the ideal climate and sunshine, we can’t miss! Indian River citrus is recognized around the world as the finest money can buy!
