New Year’s Fruit to Bring Good Luck

Looking forward to the new year? Let’s face it, many of us are – 2021 hasn’t brought us as far from 2020 as we might have liked! If you’re hoping for a more prosperous 2022 for yourself and your loved ones, you may want to choose gifts and foods to celebrate this holiday season that are symbolic of that. Just as eggs are associated with Easter and chocolate with Valentine’s Day, there are foods that are associated with New Year’s, too – some of them are even said to bring good luck!
If you’re getting ready to click away because you’re not into pickled herring or sauerkraut, hold up – it’s a safe bet that most people enjoy fruit of one kind or another, and many fruits are associated with good luck at New Year’s!
Round is the Way to Go!
In many cultures, fruits that are round in shape (like Ruby Red Grapefruit or fresh oranges) are considered lucky to eat or give as gifts for New Year’s. In the Philippines, for example, eating twelve round fruits (one for each month of the coming year) is considered a great way to start off a new year (and considering how healthy fruit is, it’s easy to see why!).
But why round fruits in particular? After all, bell-shaped tangelos are good for you, too. But round fruits in particular are prized for New Year’s because the round shape is symbolic of a number of different things (think of the Times Square ball dropping at midnight): coins are round, so a fruits gift containing round fruit can be expressive of a wish for prosperity in the coming year for the recipient. Also, the circular shape of round fruits (like those found in online fruit baskets from Hale Groves) is representative of the cyclical nature of the seasons – the end of one year, the beginning of another.
Color is Key
This doesn’t mean you have to skip the Honeybells for New Year’s though – while they may not be round, their gold color is also symbolic of wealth and prosperity.
Orange gift baskets containing Navel Oranges, Tangerines and other fruits are common Chinese New Year gifts because they’re believed to bring good luck and happiness. The Chinese words for “orange” and “tangerine” closely resemble the words for “luck” and “wealth.”
But while this makes citrus fruit baskets a great choice for a Christmas or New Year’s gift, don’t rule out assorted gift baskets containing Orchard Fresh Apples! In addition to being round, the red color of these fruits is also considered a lucky one for New Year’s Eve.
How Sweet it Is!
And finally, there’s flavor to be considered. Sweet foods served on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day bring the promise of good living. If you’re looking to avoid sweets in the new year, though (you’re sending a gift to someone you know is avoiding them), fruit is a great compromise because it’s healthy and low in calories while remaining sweet to the taste.
Happy New Year!
