Orange Juice
One of the best known fruit drinks in the world always involves orange juice. If you look into any healthy fruit punch, you will likely see that there is a mixture of orange in there somewhere. Oranges are known to be rich in vitamins and nutrients. In them you can find potassium, vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid and vitamin B, also known as folic acid. Orange juice is made with a citrus fruit that has flavonoids, which are known to give the human body health benefits. Orange juices shouldn’t be drank on an empty stomach because the acid can exacerbate your gastro-intestinal condition, which can lead to a mild short-term stomach ache. The pH level of citric acid is around 3.5.
Drinking too much orange juice can lead to acid erosion, which is known to cause the enamel in your teeth to erode. To avoid this, it is best to use a straw, so that the orange juice doesn’t come into contact with your teeth. It is recommended that we consume five pieces of fruit daily – the orange counts as one. There are different forms of orange juices on the market. In the United States, you will find that most of the commercial O.J. sold is pasteurized. The refrigerated orange juice that is shipped in liquid form is known as direct juice and is traded between producers; but a lot is sold to the consumer. In Canada, United Kingdom and United States, the orange juice is labeled not from concentrate. The O.J. you may find in the store labeled as freshly squeezed means that it is unpasteurized – this means it will expire quicker than pasteurized juice, but is known to have better quality.
Another form of O.J. is frozen orange juice concentrate. This is created with freshly squeezed oranges and filtered then pasteurized. Afterward, it is vacuumed and heated to remove the water before becoming frozen; this helps to take out specific oils and essences. It is placed at 65 degrees Fahrenheit and stored in temperatures as low as 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
Next on the list is canned orange juice, which is a small market for freshly squeezed oranges. It is known that vitamin C holds better in the canned orange juices than in the bottled orange juice. The canned juice begins to lose its flavor when it is stored at room temperature for more than 12 weeks.
